What is CMMI?

CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) is a framework of best practices designed to help organisations improve their processes and business performance. The framework guides businesses through five maturity levels to optimise processes and achieve goals like improved product quality and customer satisfaction.

In a nutshell, CMMI

  • Provides a framework for improvement (Structure an approach for improving processes)
  • Helps in meeting the needs of our customers (Improved processes result in meeting higher customer needs)
  • Measures capability (bestows a pathway to evaluate the organisation’s capabilities in line with the best industry practices and identifies areas for improvement)

CMMI Maturity Levels

CMMI offers five maturity levels for processes:

  • Level 1: Initial: Processes are unpredictable (ad hoc) and poorly controlled.
  • Level 2: Managed: Processes are planned, documented, performed, monitored, and controlled at the project level.
  • Level 3: Defined: Processes are well-characterised and understood, with standard procedures and tools defined at the organisational level.
  • Level 4: Quantitatively Managed: Statistical and quantitative techniques are used to manage processes.
  • Level 5: Optimising: Processes are continuously improved through incremental advancements.
